homeowners in Jawahar Nagar at Khar (E) along the Tansa pipeline, the Bombay high court has directed the Brihanmum-bai Municipal Corpora-tion (BMC) to conduct a fresh survey and follow due procedure of evacuating the home owners if they fall in the 10 meter distance of the pipeline.The court also directed the BMC to initiate the land acquisition procedure after the owners claimed that their homes were on private land and hence the BMC could not carry out demolition of their structures.A division bench of justices A.S. Oka and P.N. Deshmukh was hearing the writ petition filed by the residents wherein they had claimed that even though their homes were not within the 10 meter periphery of the pipeline that supplies water to central Mumbai, the BMC had issued them eviction notices and had also started demolition work.

The petitioners had also claimed that the civic body had started demolishing structures along the pipeline arbitrarily in response to an order of another court even though it had no right to demolish structures that were on private land.  Advocate Pradeep Thorat who represented the homeowners also informed the court that though the homes were at a distance of 18 meters from the pipeline, the BMC was demolishing their structures claiming that another pipeline was going under the homes and hence the 10-meter stipulation was applicable to them too.While the BMC had been directed to provide proofs of the claim, it failed to do so and hence the court while disposing off the petition directed the BMC to corroborate their claims with a fresh survey and also directed the BMC to initiate land acquisition proceedings and to follow due procedure.The court also directed the municipal corporation to give the homeowners three weeks time after conducting the survey so that they can approach the court in case there are any discrepancies.end-ofTags: bmc, bombay high court, fresh survey, hearing the writ petition

Qualcomm has revealed new security and battery life features on its latest Snapdragon 845 mobile phone processor, a chip that customarily powers high-end Android-based phones from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and others.The chips are increasingly important to Qualcomm’s financial picture while its patent licensing business is under attack from Apple Inc.Qualcomm’s latest chip features a range of improvements to help it deal with artificial intelligence tasks like recognizing and categorising images, Keith Kressin, a senior vice president at the company, told Reuters in an interview.For the first time, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip also features physically separate processor called a "Secure Processing Unit" for storing information like fingerprints and iris scans, similar to technology found on Apple’s iPhone. Previous Qualcomm chips had a "trusted zone" that "With biometric identification on the rise, it was important to take (security) to the next level," Kressin said.The company tweaked various parts of the chip for so-called machine learning applications. While that includes things consumers might notice like image recognition, it also includes behind-the-scenes improvements. For example, the chip will help ensure that a user’s fingers do not accidentally register as taps when gripping the sides of an edge-to-edge display.Kressin said the chip will also help phones register touch screen inputs when wet. That is a critical improvement because even though many top phone models from Samsung and others are now water resistant, they are difficult to operate with water on the screen.The newest Snapdragon also has features aimed at virtual and augmented reality headsets. One feature called "Adreno foveation" will let the edges of a headset screen operate at lower resolutions while the center of the screen is sharper, similar to how human peripheral vision is fuzzier than central vision. The technique can save battery live, Kressin said.Qualcomm does not disclose revenue figures for its Snapdragon chips. New Delhi: Persistent buying by jewellers and retailers to meet the wedding season demand pushed gold prices higher by Rs 140 to Rs 33,300 per 10 gram at the close of the week.In contrast, silver prices drifted lower due to reduced offtake by coin makers and consuming units.Overcoming a mixed sentiment from global markets, gold prices climbed on account of favourable domestic cues like wedding season demand from local High Purity Titanium Billet jewellers as well as retailers.Globally, gold rose by USD 1,284.30 an ounce as against the previous week's USD 1,282.30 an ounce. Silver too advanced to USD 15.46 an ounce from USD 15.41. Market remained shut on Saturday on account of "Republic Day".In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity commenced the week higher at Rs 33,200 and Rs 33,050 per 10 gram, respectively. Both varieties of the precious metal advanced to a high of Rs 33,325 and Rs 32,175, respectively, during the mid-week.However, lack of necessary buying support at higher levels, gold prices of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity slipped marginally to end the week at Rs 33,300 and Rs 33,150 per 10 gram, still showing a rise of Rs 140.Sovereign, however, moved in a narrow range through the week and pegged at the last level of Rs 25,500 per piece of 8 gram. On the other hand, in restricted activity, silver ready ended Rs 50 lower at Rs 40,050 per kg after shuttling between Rs 40,160 and Rs 39,850.Silver weekly-based in likewise manners ended lower by Rs 162 at Rs 39,036 per kg.
